LERNING TO LIVE
Lesson 8: What Does the Bible Say About Who Jesus Really Is?
1. Read Colossians 2;1-9. What
does vs. 9 say about what dwells in Christ?
Colossians 2:1-9 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have
for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those who have not met me face to
face. (2) My goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love,
may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings
in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ,
(3) in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
(4) I say this so that no one will deceive you through arguments that
sound reasonable. (5) For though I am absent from you in body, I am
present with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your morale and the firmness of
your faith in Christ. (6) Therefore, just as you received Christ
Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, (7) rooted and
built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing
with thankfulness. (8) Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate
you through an empty, deceitful philosophy that is according to human traditions
and the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (9)
For in him all the fullness of deity lives in bodily form,
2. What is hidden in Christ, according to Colossians 2:3?
(above passage)
3. In I Corinthians 1:24, what two
things does it state about Christ?
1Corinthians 1:24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
b.
4. In John 1:14, what does it say
about Who Jesus really is?
John 1:14 Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We
saw his glory — the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came
from the Father.
5. What does it say about the Word
(Christ) in John 1:1?
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was fully God.
6. According to John 1:10, who
created the world?
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but
the world did not recognize him.
7. Read Genesis 1:1-9. How did
God bring things into being?
Genesis 1:1-9 In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth. (2) Now the earth was without shape and
empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of
God was moving over the surface of the water. (3) God said, "Let there be
light." And there was light! (4) God saw that the light was good, so
God separated the light from the darkness. (5) God called the light
"day" and the darkness "night." There was evening, and there was morning,
marking the first day. (6) God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst
of the waters and let it separate water from water. (7) So God made
the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it.
It was so. (8) God called the expanse "sky." There was evening, and there
was morning, a second day. (9) God said, "Let the water under the
sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear." It was so.
Col0ssians 1:13-20 He delivered us
from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he
loves, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
(15) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation, (16) for all things in heaven and on earth were created by him —
all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether
principalities or powers — all things were created through him and for him.
(17) He himself is before all things and all things are held together in
him. (18) He is the head of the body, the church, as well as the
beginning, the firstborn from among the dead, so that he himself may become
first in all things. (19) For God was pleased to have all his fullness
dwell in the Son (20) and through him to reconcile all things to himself
by making peace through the blood of his cross — through him, whether things on
earth or things in heaven.
COMMENT:
The point to the above verses is that the Bible definitely teaches that Jesus
Christ is God! According to the Bible, without Jesus Christ, God the Son,
God would not have fullness; God would not be all-powerful; God would not be
all-wise and all-knowing. He is called the Word of God. Jesus is the
One Who spoke things into being in Genesis, chapter one.
9. What does Christ say about Himself
in John 10:30?
John 10:30 The Father and I are
one."
John 10:33 The Jewish leaders
replied, "We are not going to stone you for a good deed but for blasphemy,
because you, a man, are claiming to be God."
John 17:1-5 When Jesus had finished
saying these things, he looked upward to heaven and said, "Father, the time has
come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you — (2) just as you
have given him authority over all humanity, so that he may give eternal life to
everyone you have given him. (3) Now this is eternal life — that they know
you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. (4) I
glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. (5) And
now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I had with you before the
world was created.
Isa 42:8 I am the
Lord! That is my name! I will not share my glory
with anyone else, or the praise due me with idols.
13. Comparing John 17:5 with Isaiah 42:8, what does this make
Jesus?
COMMENT:
Why did Jesus, God the Son, become a man and become obedient and subject to the
Father while here on earth? God the Son took upon Himself a perfect body
for four reasons:
1. To show how man was intended to live (obey and serve God).
2. A blood sacrifice was required for the payment of sin.
3. A high priest had to be a man and so, for Jesus to be our understanding High
Priest, He became a man.
4. That men could have a new body like His given to them in Heaven.
14. What did Jesus bear in His body?
1Pe 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we
may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. By his
wounds you were healed.
15. In Philippians, 2:6, what two
things does it say about Christ?
Phil. 2:6 who though he
existed in the form of God did not regard equality
with God as something to be grasped,
a.
b.
16. What form did He take and into
what was He made?
Philippians 2:7 but emptied himself
by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in
human nature.
17. In what way did God the Son humble Himself? Phil.
2:7
18. Why was Jesus made lower than the
angels?
Hebrews 2:9
but we see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little
while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so
that by God's grace he would experience death on behalf of everyone.
19. Read Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1, 2; 7:24-27; 10:11-12.
Heb 4:14-16 Therefore since we have a great high
priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold
fast to our confession. (15) For we do not have a high priest
incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in
every way just as we are, yet without sin. (16) Therefore let us
confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace
whenever we need help.
Heb 5:1-2 For every high priest is taken from among
the people and appointed to represent them before God, to offer both gifts and
sacrifices for sins. (2) He is able to deal compassionately with
those who are ignorant and erring, since he also is subject to weakness,
Heb 7:24-27 but he holds his priesthood permanently
since he lives forever. (25) So he is able to save completely those
who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
(26) For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy,
innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
(27) He has no need to do every day what those priests do, to offer
sacrifices first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people, since
he did this in offering himself once for all.
Heb 10:11-12 And
every priest stands day after day serving and offering the same sacrifices again
and again — sacrifices that can never take away sins.
(12) But when this priest
had offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, he sat down at the right hand
of God,
a. b. c. d. e. 20. What does Philippians 3:21 and I
John 3:2 promise to give you? 21. What remarkable things did Jesus
Christ say about Himself in the following verses? John 8:12 Matthew 24:35 John 14:6 Matthew 28:18 Mark 14:62 John 11:24 John 5:22 John 10:7 Matthew 1:23 John 6:48, 51 22. What remarkable things does the
word of God say about Jesus in the following verses? Revelation 1:8 "I am the
Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God — the one who is, and who was, and who
is still to come — the All-Powerful! Revelation 19:13 He is dressed in clothing dipped
in blood, and he is called the Word of God. Revelation 19:19 Then I saw
the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to do battle
with the one who rode the horse and with his army. 1Corinthians 10:4 and all
drank the same spiritual drink. For they were all drinking from the spiritual
rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 1Timothy 6:15 — whose
appearing the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
will reveal at the right time. 1Timothy 2:6 who gave
himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time. Act 3:15 You killed the
Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this fact we are
witnesses! 23. What are we to give to Jesus?
Revelation 4:11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power, since you created all things, and because
of your will they existed and were created!" 24. What did the disciples do when
they saw the Lord? 25. What will God allow?
26. What do the following verses have
in common? Matthew 8:2 And a leper approached, and bowed low
before him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Mat 9:18 As he was saying
these things, a ruler came, bowed low before him, and said, "My daughter has
just died, but come and lay your hand on her and she will live." Mat 13:33 He told them another parable: "The
kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures
of flour until all the dough had risen." Mat 15:25 But she came and bowed down before him
and said, "Lord, help me!" Mat 18:26 Then the slave
threw himself to the ground before him, saying, 'Be patient with me, and I will
repay you everything.' Comparing #25 with #26, who then is Jesus? What did Thomas call Jesus? John 20:28
Php 3:21 who will transform these
humble bodies of ours into the likeness of his glorious body by means of that
power by which he is able to subject all things to himself.
1Jn 3:2 Dear friends, we are God's children now, and what we will be has
not yet been revealed. We know that whenever it is revealed we will be like him,
because we will see him just as he is.
Isaiah 9:6 For a child has been born
to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called:
Extraordinary Strategist, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Revelation 1:5-6 and from Jesus
Christ — the faithful witness, the firstborn from among the dead, the ruler over
the kings of the earth. To the one who loves us and has set us free from our
sins at the cost of his own blood (6) and has appointed us as a
kingdom, as priests serving his God and Father — to him be the glory and the
power for ever and ever! Amen.
Matthew 28:9 But Jesus met them,
saying, "Greetings!" They came to him, held on to his feet and worshiped him.
Exodus 24:14 He told the elders,
"Wait for us in this place until we return to you. Here are Aaron and Hur with
you. Whoever has any matters of dispute can approach them."

house and saw the child with Mary his mother, they bowed down and worshiped him.
They opened their treasure boxes and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh.
