Lesson 15: What Does the Bible Teach About the Holy
Spirit?
1. What does Genesis 1:2 say about
the Holy Spirit?
Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was
over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the
surface of the water.
2. What does Revelation 22:17 say
about the Holy Spirit?
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one
who hears say: "Come!" And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who
wants it take the water of life free of charge.
Comment:
Thus, the Holy Spirit is mentioned throughout the Bible from the beginning to
the end.
1Corinthians 2:9-10
But just as it is written, "Things that no eye has seen,
or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God has prepared
for those who love him." (10) God
has revealed these to us by the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even
the deep things of God.
4. The Spirit of God is not an “it”,
but a real person. As a real person, God has revealed that the Spirit has
feelings. In the following verses tell what the Holy Spirit
does or feels.
Romans 5:5 And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been
poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of
God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Galatians 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.
Acts 16:6-7 They went through the region of Phrygia
and
Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of
God are the sons of God.
1Corinthians 6:11 Some of you once lived this way.
But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
5. What three things is the Holy
Spirit doing to those who are unbelievers today?
John 16:7-11 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am
going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I
go, I will send him to you. (8) And when he comes, he will prove the
world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment — (9) concerning
sin, because they do not believe in me; (10) concerning righteousness,
because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; (11)
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
Comments:
There are three known functions of the Holy Spirit. First, the Holy Spirit
convicts the world of sin. Second, the Holy Spirit points out that man is
unrighteous but that God will give man the righteousness of Christ free (2Co
5:21 God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in
him we would become the righteousness of God). Third, the Holy Spirit witnesses
to the world and individuals that they are already under God’s judgment (John
3:36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects
the Son will not see life, but God's wrath remains on him).
6. What does the Holy Spirit do for
the believer in Jesus Christ according to the following passages?
2Corinthians 1:21-22 But it is God who establishes us together with you in
Christ and who anointed us, (22) who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit
in our hearts as a down payment.
Ephesians 1:13-14 And when you heard the word of
truth (the gospel of your salvation) — when you believed in Christ — you were
marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit, (14) who is the down
payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of God's own possession, to the
praise of his glory.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of
God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
7. What does the following Old
Testament passage say about the King’s seal?
Esther 8:8 Now you write in the king's name whatever in your opinion is
appropriate concerning the Jews and seal it with the king's signet ring. Any
decree that is written in the king's name and sealed with the king's signet ring
cannot be rescinded.
Comment:
Ephesians 1:13, 14 tells us that we were sealed (past) at the time we believed.
Ephesians 4:30 tells us that this sealing for the day of redemption (future).
So, today we carry the seal of redemption. This seal is a guarantee that the
redemption we have received will not be lost, it is a “decree written in the
king’s name and sealed” until the day of redemption.
8. What is our present body?
1Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of
the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
(20) For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.
9. What does God want us to do with
out body?
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies
of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice — alive, holy, and pleasing to God
— which is your reasonable service. (2) Do not be conformed to this
present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may
test and approve what is the will of God — what is good and well-pleasing and
perfect.
10. What does the Holy Spirit use to
direct our lives?
Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God.
11. Name
seven things from Ephesians 5:18-21 that indicate that a person is filled with
the Holy Spirit?
Galatians 5:18-21
But if
you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the
flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, idolatry,
sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries,
dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar
things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such
things will not inherit the
12. What nine things will
characterize a person under the control of the Spirit of God?
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, and
self-control. Against such things there is no law.
