LEARNING TO LIVE
Lesson No. 11: What Does the Bible Say
About How We Can Please the Savior?
1. What
does I John 3:22 say is necessary if you are to have your prayers answered?
1John 3:22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his
commandments and do the things that are pleasing to him.
John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and
my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.
3. What
does obeying the truth do for the soul of the Christian?
1Peter 1:22 You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to
show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
4. To what extent did the Savior become obedient to the
Father?
Philippians 2:8 He humbled himself, by becoming
obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross!
5. What kind of example did Jesus set before His mother and
step-father?
Luke 2:51 Then he went down with them and came to
Nazareth, and was obedient to them. But his mother kept
all these things in her heart.
6. When should a person obey God?
Psalm 18:44 When they hear of my exploits, they submit
to me. Foreigners are powerless before me;
7. What is the result of not obeying God's Word?
Psalm 119:136 Tears stream down from my eyes, because
they do not keep your law.
8. What is the result of obeying God?
Job 36:11 If they obey and serve him, they live out
their days in prosperity and their years in pleasantness.
COMMENT:
Love for a most gracious Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, must be the cause for a
person to obey God. Many people are willing to sacrifice their money and
goods yet are unwilling to obey what God says in His Word. For example, God
commands us in Hebrews 10:25 that we must not stop going to church, yet a person
will momentarily get hurt by another Christian and quit going to church.
He was going for the wrong reasons! The reason a person should go to
church or do anything is that he loves Jesus Christ and wants to obey His word.
Please read Colossians 3:17, 23, 24, and Philippians 1:21. If we are
loving God and living for others, then all other things will become trivial and
meaningless in comparison with the Savior. Read Romans 8:18; Philippians
1:29.
9. What four things should a child do in relation to his
family?
Proverbs 6:20 My child, guard the commands of your
father and do not forsake the instruction of your mother.

10. What will be the result of a child obeying his parents?
Ephesians
6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. (2)
"Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment
accompanied by a promise, namely, (3) "that it may go
well with you and that you will live a long time on the earth."
Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the
governing authorities. For there is no authority except by God's appointment,
and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God.
1Peter 2:13-17 Be subject to every human institution
for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme (14) or to
governors as those he commissions to punish wrongdoers and praise those who do
good. (15) For God wants you to silence the ignorance of foolish
people by doing good. (16) Live as free people, not using your
freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God's slaves. (17) Honor all people,
love the family of believers, fear God, honor the king.
12. When there is a conflict and one in authority is asking
you to commit a sin, what should be your decision, according to Acts
5:29?
Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles replied, "We must
obey God rather than people.
13. God tells you in Hebrews 13:17 to obey them that have the
rule over you who are in the church. Why?
Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for
they keep watch over your souls and will give an account for their work. Let
them do this with joy and not with complaints, for this would be no advantage
for you.
14. If I am working for someone, what does God expect me to
do?
Colossians 3:22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in
every respect, not only when they are watching — like those who are strictly
people-pleasers — but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord.
COMMENT:
God is not nearly as concerned with what we do and go through as He is with our
response (attitude) to what we go through. In all that He designs
or allows us to experience, His chief concern is that our attitude
becomes consistent with those of His Son, Jesus Christ. We are to become
more like the Savior in our daily living. He was subject to the authority
of His parents as He was growing up. See Hebrews 5:8.
15. What kind of example did Christ leave for you?
1Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, since Christ
also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps.
16. Even though Jesus is God the Son, did He demand His
rights as God while living here on earth? NO! Philippians 2:8 tells
us that He humbled Himself! What was the Savior's response to the most
horrible situation that could ever be faced by Him?
Matthew 26:39 Going a little farther, he threw himself
down with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if possible, let this
cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will."
17. What attitude should you have?
Psalm 40:8 I want to do what pleases you, my God. Your
law dominates my thoughts."
18. What should be your prayer every day?
Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do what pleases you, for you
are my God. May your kind presence lead me into a level land.
19. The best way to obey is to read God's word and find out
what He desires for your life. What does Galatians 6:10 say you should
desire to do?
Gal 6:10 So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let
us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of
faith.
20. If you give yourself over to the service of others, see
what God has promised you in Isaiah 58:10-12.
Isaiah 58:10-12 You must actively help the hungry and
feed the oppressed. Then your light will dispel the darkness, and your darkness
will be transformed into noonday. (11) The
Lord will continually lead you; he
will feed you even in parched regions. He will give you renewed strength, and
you will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring that continually produces
water. (12) Your perpetual ruins will be rebuilt; you will
reestablish the ancient foundations. You will be called, 'The one who repairs
broken walls, the one who makes the streets livable again.'

21. What will be the result of all this is, that you step out
on faith and do them?
1John 1:4 Thus we are writing these things so that our
joy may be complete.
COMMENT:
What is you aim in life? One has said, "He who aims at nothing hits it."
We need to have a life aim or objective. When you come to the end of the
years you have left, and you have nothing but death to look forward to and
nothing but memories to look back upon will you say, "I LIVED THE BEST I KNEW
HOW FOR THE LORD JESUS AND I AM READY TO GO!"?
