Lesson 1 - What Does
The Bible Say About Itself?
2Ti
3:16-17 Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17)
that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good
work.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any
double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and
joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.
Psalm
119:11 In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you.
(Psalm 119:18) Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law.
(Luke
24:15-27) While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and
began traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
And He said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with one
another as you are walking?" And they stood still, looking sad. One of them,
named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You the only one visiting
Jerusalem
and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?" And He said
to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things about Jesus the
Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all
the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the
sentence of death, and crucified Him. "But we were hoping that it was He who was
going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it
is the third day since these things happened. "But also some women among us
amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning, and did not find His
body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that
He was alive. "Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just
exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see." And He said to
them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have
spoken! "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter
into His glory?" Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He
explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
(John
5:39) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have
eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;
(Rom
15:4) For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our
instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope.
(1Co
10:11) Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were
written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
(Joshua 1:8) "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but
you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do
according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way
prosperous, and then you will have success.
13. Do you think the same responsibilities are applicable to Christians?
(James 1:22) But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely
hearers who delude themselves.
(Mat
24:35) "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
(Psalm
119:105)
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to
my path.
(Mat
4:4-10) But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON
BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"
(5) Then the devil *took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the
pinnacle of the temple, (6) and *said to Him, "If You are the Son of
God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS
CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT
STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" (7) Jesus said to him, "On the
other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"
(8) Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all
the kingdoms of the world and their glory; (9) and he said to Him,
"All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." (10)
Then Jesus *said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE
LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"
Act
20:32 "And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is
able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are
sanctified.
Rom
10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Psa
119:9
How can a young man keep his way pure? By
keeping it according to Your word.
Psa
119:133 Establish my footsteps in Your word, And do not let any iniquity
have dominion over me.
Consider:
When Paul (2 Timothy 2:16-17) and Jesus (Luke 24:27) speak of “all” the Scriptures, they are referring to the Old Testament.
Is the Old Testament The Word of God, or does it merely contain The Word of God?
Which position is more consistent with the Bible’s testimony of itself (2 Tim. 2:16-17; Luke 24:27)?
If the Scriptures simply contain The Word of God, how does the student determine what portions of Scripture is included and which portions should be omitted?
Is the determination a subjective consideration? Or, is there some objective criteria? In other word, do we decide what is the Word of God because it feels right (subjective)? Or, is there some rational/empirical criteria for making these judgments?
If man determines what is The Word of God, does this mean that man judges the Word rather than the Word of God judging man (Heb. 4:12)?
