The Attributes of God

Lesson 17: The Sovereignty of God

Review: What have we studied so far?

The Sovereignty of God

Defined: Sovereignty means Ruler. In regards to God it is the perfection whereby He is the absolute and free ruler of His creation.

Verses for meditation:

Deuteronomy 10:14, 17 14 The heavens – indeed the highest heavens – belong to the Lord your God, as does the earth and everything in it…. 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God …

1 Chronicles 29:11-12 11 O Lord, you are great, mighty, majestic, magnificent, glorious, and sovereign over all the sky and earth! You have dominion and exalt yourself as the ruler of all. 12 You are the source of wealth and honor; you rule over all. You possess strength and might to magnify and give strength to all.

Nehemiah 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, along with all their multitude of stars, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You impart life to them all, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

Psalm 22:28 For the Lord is king and rules over the nations.

Psalm 47:2-3, 7-8 2 For the sovereign Lord is awe-inspiring; he is the great king who rules the whole earth! 3 He subdued nations beneath us and countries under our feet…7 For God is king of the whole earth! Sing a well-written song! 8 God reigns over the nations! God sits on his holy throne!

Psalm 115:3 Our God is in heaven! He does whatever he pleases!

Jeremiah 27:5 “I made the earth and the people and animals on it by my mighty power and great strength, and I give it to whomever I see fit.

Acts 17:24-26 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives life and breath and everything to everyone. 26 From one man he made every nation of the human race to inhabit the entire earth, determining their set times and the fixed limits of the places where they would live,

Revelation 17:17 For God has put into their minds to carry out his purpose by making a decision to give their royal power to the beast until the words of God are fulfilled.

All Christians acknowledge God’s sovereignty when they pray.

God’s sovereignty is founded on:

The Nature of God’s sovereignty

Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants.

Isaiah 10:15 Does an ax exalt itself over the one who wields it, or a saw magnify itself over the one who cuts with it? As if a scepter should brandish the one who raises it, or a staff should lift up what is not made of wood!

Isaiah 45:9 One who argues with his creator is in grave danger, one who is like a mere shard among the other shards on the ground! The clay should not say to the potter, “What in the world are you doing? Your work lacks skill!”

Romans 9:15-18 15 For he says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy. 17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh: “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may demonstrate my power in you, and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.

Romans 9:20-21 20 But who indeed are you – a mere human being – to talk back to God? Does what is molded say to the molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for special use and another for ordinary use?

1 Corinthians 12:11 It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things.

Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, since you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created!”

God shares his image by giving man limited sovereignty of the earth.

Genesis 1:26-28 26 Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness, so they may rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move on the earth.” 27 God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply! Fill the earth and subdue it! Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that moves on the ground.”

Additional verses:

Daniel 4:35  All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he wishes with the army of heaven and with those who inhabit the earth. No one slaps his hand and says to him, ‘What have you done?’

Jeremiah 32:17 ‘Oh, Lord God, you did indeed make heaven and earth by your mighty power and great strength. Nothing is too hard for you!

Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Ephesians 1:22 And God put all things under Christ’s feet, and he gave him to the church as head over all things.

Isaiah 14:24 24 The Lord who commands armies makes this solemn vow: “Be sure of this: Just as I have intended, so it will be; just as I have planned, it will happen... 27 Indeed, the Lord who commands armies has a plan, and who can possibly frustrate it? His hand is ready to strike, and who can possibly stop it?

Isaiah 46:9-11 9 Remember what I accomplished in antiquity! Truly I am God, I have no peer; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 who announces the end from the beginning and reveals beforehand what has not yet occurred, who says, ‘My plan will be realized, I will accomplish what I desire,’ 11 who summons an eagle from the east, from a distant land, one who carries out my plan. Yes, I have decreed, yes, I will bring it to pass; I have formulated a plan, yes, I will carry it out.

Job 42:2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted;

Isaiah 55:11 In the same way, the promise that I make does not return to me, having accomplished nothing. No, it is realized as I desire and is fulfilled as I intend.”
